Mumbai, December 03, 2015: Matheran is all set to welcome runners at ‘MatheRUN’, the first ever initiative to create awareness of preserving mountains on International Mountain’s Day on 6thof December. The 10 km & 10 miles run is organized by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation in association with NGO’s Ecofolks and Greenaiders. The highlight of the event is a special tour guide training by MTDC to ensure employment opportunities to locals.
Paraag Jaiin Nainutia (IAS), Managing Director, MTDC said, “Matheran attracts lakhs of tourists every year with its pollution-free environment and stunning panoramic view of Sahayadri ranges. MatheRUN is a great opportunity to invite more and more tourist to this beautiful hill station. We have introduced certified training to locals, which will help them earn a livelihood by becoming professional guides. Our initiative will generate employment opportunities to many locals living at Matheran and nearby areas.”
The run is an open event for mountain lovers. The special dirt track selected for MatheRUN is almost 800 meters above the sea level. The event is expected to attract many college students, who are planning to campaign for green tourism. These students are also preparing for banners and posters mentioning the importance of clean environment.
Paresh Pimpale, organizing member from MatheRUN team said, “We have received entries mainly from Pune and Mumbai. People are excited to join us to celebrate International Mountain’s Day. The event highlights special attention on grave issues being faced by Matheran and also will encourage stakeholders to come together to develop better Matheran to promote tourism”.
Matheran Eco Sensitive Zone Committee has also organized a photography exhibition on Matheran showcasing its rich biodiversity and heritage. People can enjoy a nature walk around Matheran hill along with the photo treat.
As part of celebration, MTDC has organized a five day training camp in 10 locations to ensure locals get employment opportunities. MTDC will train locals to become professional guides in various languages. The training will provide information on Matheran, its local bio diversity, culture and history. Also a team of professionals will teach soft skills techniques to please tourists visiting Matheran.
