Thakur Suraj Mal (1768-1787) built the Surajgarh Fort in 1778. Born in 1755, he was a valiant warrior and lived a prosperous reign, with his life ending in the Battle of Tunga in 1787, against the Marathas led by Mahadji Scindhia. The great antiquity of the Kangra family is undoubted. The first historic reference to Kangra/Jhalandhara is found in the works of Ptolemy – the Greek Geographer who accompanied Alexander on his expeditions.
