Hong Kong, December 05, 2016: Ovolo Group’s CEO & Founder, Mr. Girish Jhunjhnuwala has officially been named the 2016 EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ (EOY) for the Hong Kong and Macau region. With its 10th anniversary celebrating the theme “Seizing opportunities to drive reform and innovation”, Mr. Jhunjhnuwala demonstrated a series of achievements in redefining modern hospitality through a customer-centric perspective that was a first of its kind both within and outside of the region. Mr. Jhunjhnuwala was chosen from a pool of several successful entrepreneurs thanks to his vision, leadership and sense of social responsibility to win the most prestigious business award for entrepreneurs in the world.
Mr. Jhunjhnuwala’s win was achieved thanks to Ovolo Group, the company he founded over 14 years ago with the mission to disrupt the hospitality industry. Launched as the first Owner/Operator hospitality brand in Hong Kong, Mr. Jhunjhnuwala had a goal of creating a brand that made accommodation as effortless and inclusive as possible for the digitally-minded modern traveller. Originally founded as a serviced apartment business, Ovolo soon shifted its focus to the hotel sector. And Mr. Jhunjhnuwala, armed with an unbreakable vision, set out to make Ovolo into one of the region’s most dynamic hotel brands. Within a few short years, Ovolo grew from its flagship property at 2 Arbuthnot Road (Ovolo Central), into what is today a portfolio of eight award-winning hotels and two serviced apartments across Hong Kong and the Australian cities of Melbourne and Sydney.
To win the award, Mr. Jhunjhnuwala was judged against six criteria ranging from his entrepreneurial spirit and strategic direction, to innovation and the personal integrity as well as the influence of his business practices. He shared a story on the amazing opportunities afforded to him in starting a business in Hong Kong, staying true to a vision when industry experts voiced opposition, and how innovation is only innovative when it’s embraced by people.
