Macao, May 12, 2016: The Venetian Macao is pleased to announce the return of The Philadelphia Orchestra to Macao.Led by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, The Orchestra will be performing at The Venetian Theatre on May 28-29. This will be the fifth consecutive year that the Orchestra has performed in Macao. The highlight of the Macao performances will be a special guest appearance by acclaimed Chinese pianist Lang Lang who will join the Orchestra on the first night of the Macao show- The Philadelphia Orchestra with Lang Lang in Concert, while Japanese-American violinist Ryu Goto will make his Philadelphia Orchestra debut on the second night- The Philadelphia Orchestra’s 2016 Tour of Asia and China Residency in Macao.
The Macao performances are proudly supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. government, while The Venetian Macao is the presenting sponsor for the Asia tour which will see the Orchestra perform in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Osaka and Kawasaki in Japan. Tickets for The Philadelphia Orchestra with Lang Lang in concert on May 28and The Philadelphia Orchestra 2016 China Residency and Tour of Asia on May 29at the Venetian Theatre go on sale Thursday, May 5 at all Cotai Ticketing box offices.
Renowned pianist Lang Lang has a special relationship with The Philadelphia Orchestra. He first came to the United States as a teenager to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. His close connection with Philadelphia continued when he made his Philadelphia Orchestra debut early in his professional career. Lang Lang’s first professional tour to China with a major Western orchestra was also with The Philadelphia Orchestra. In Macao he will be performing Rachmaninoff’s First Piano Concerto.
Japanese-American violinist Ryu Goto will make his Philadelphia Orchestra debut in Macao, Osaka, Tokyo and Kawasaki, performing Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Toru Takemitsu’s Nostalghia – In Memory of Andrei Tarkovsky for the Philadelphia Orchestra’s first performances of the piece.
To continue its commitment to cultural diplomacy and exchange, The Philadelphia Orchestra will also be holding a series of special events and activities throughout the tour. In addition to the two concerts at The Venetian Macao, there will be two community events in Macao on Saturday, May 28 including master classes with The Philadelphia Orchestra musicians and a pop-up outdoor performance at the World Heritage Site Taipa Houses Museum.
