New Delhi, February 20, 2017: The Maharashtra State Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology and Research Society, Pune had organized the annual day long State-Level Seminar cum workshop under the Quality Improvement Programme of the Savitribai Phule Pune University on 10th February 2017. The theme for this year’s seminar cum workshop was “Hospitality Skills Enhancement- Be a Notch above the rest”.

The seminar had sessions by distinguished industry experts like Mr. Rohit Pandey- Director of Human Resources at the Westin Pune, who was the Chief Guest, Ms. Swati Sengupta, Gold Medalist from IIM Calcutta, Trainer – Communication & Soft Skills, Mr. Shailesh Sanzgiri, Principal Consultant , Shaw Hotels and Consultancy Services, Senior Consultant – Hospitality Solutions Unlimited, and Mr. Viraj Sawant- Brand Ambassador, Berkmann Wine Cellars India Pvt.Ltd. who shared their vast experience and guided students on various aspects.

Dr. Nanadanwar, Principal of the Government Polytechnic, Pune and Joint Director Technical Education Regional Office Pune, stressed the need of young and skilled professionals by 2020. He also informed the audience about the Honourable Prime Minister’s vision for Skill India and congratulated the Principal Anita Moodliar for organizing such a relevant seminar cum workshop in today’s times.

Ms. Moodliar briefly introduced all the distinguished dignitaries, and went on to quote Nelson Mandela about “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. She also mentioned the dearth of skilled professionals in Hotel and Restaurant sector which is reeling under right manpower crunch.

Mr, Rohit Pandey emphasized that he has observed in recent interview sessions conducted by him, that a majority of the candidates were lacking in communication skills. He insisted that hotel management candidates today need to improve their English language communication skills if they want to succeed in the field.

Ms. Swati Sengupta, accentuated the importance of developing correct listening skills in order to communicate appropriately. She further said that not only the words or the linguistic skills are important but also the body language.

Mr. Shaielsh Sanzgiri identified essential skill sets for the hospitality professionals amongst which commitment, customer service, cultural awareness financial management and an ability to resolve issues ranked high.

Viraj Sawant spoke about current trends in Food and wine pairing and recreating classic cocktails and mocktails in a new Avatar is what most of the bar professionals are practicing.

Workshop Overview

Post lunch, in the afternoon session there were workshops by Chef Shailendra Kekade– Celebrity chef, General Manager & Executive Chef, Stone Water Grill – Plate presentation and garnishes Mr. Viraj Sawant – Wine appreciation, Chef Ashok Pusegaonkar Senior Consultant- Bakery & Patisserie – Unique desserts & their presentation Ms. Amruta Loya Creative Designer at Absinthium – Creating memories for events décor & planning.

This seminar and workshop was attended by students and faculty members from various institutes of Hotel management from Maharashtra. The Hospitality Industry also marked its presence in the form of representatives from various hotels and renowned restaurants and clubs from in and around Pune.
