Mysuru, May 30, 2017:  The hospitality sector in Mysore region has urged the Centre to reduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates announced for hotels and restaurants on the grounds that it will cripple the tourism sector. The economy of Mysuru to a large extent hinges on its tourism industry. The proposed GST rate is higher than what was bargained for, said Mr Narayana Gowda, President, Mysore Hotel Owners' Association. The GST on restaurants varies from 5 per cent to 18 per cent depending on the turnover. However, hardly any hotels or restaurants come under the 5 per cent slab rate which is restricted to units with an annual turnover of Rs 50 lakh, Mr Gowda said. 'Most restaurants have an annual turnover that is higher than Rs 250 lakh per annum and hence fall under 12 per cent slab, the burden of which will fall on customers,' he added. But if the restaurant is air-conditioned, then the tax is 18 per cent and will make eating out a difficult proposition, fear stakeholders who have sought a 5 per cent GST on standalone restaurants and hotels. In addition, there are differential GST rates based on room rentals or tariffs. While there is no GST for room rentals upto Rs 1,000, it is 12 per cent on room rent ranging between Rs 1,001 and Rs 2,500 and 18 per cent on room rents above it up to Rs 5,000. However, room tariff above Rs 5,000 will draw a 28 per cent GST and will discourage tourists, aver the association members. From the customer's point of view, the standards of rooms levying rates below Rs 1,000 tends to range from awful in most cases to tolerable in some cases while a standard room with no compromise on hygiene will cost anywhere between Rs 2,500 and Rs 5,000. But with the new GST rates, the existing facilities will cost more without any proportionate increase in the standards. Stakeholders in the hospitality sector pointed out those even middle class tourists from the salaried sector seek comfortable accommodation that ranges from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,500 per day. But a 28 per cent GST on this tariff if it is a star category or an 18 per cent GST for non-star category hotels will shoot up the rentals and make them unaffordable. This will impact tourism, they feared. Mr Prashanth of Safe Wheels, which deals with tourism promotion and car rental businesses, said that the tourists will have to pay more and this will negatively affect the sector. 'I have already circulated a petition to our association members to sign and the same will be forwarded to the government,' he added. Mysuru receives nearly 3.5 million tourists and the turnover ranges from Rs 1,200 crore to Rs 1,800 crore per annum. There are about 6,000 to 7,000 rooms and the accommodation ranges from budget to luxury categories. The rentals for these will go up once the GST rates are implemented. Meanwhile Hotels and restaurants in Karnataka will observe a day's bandh on May 30 to protest against the steep hike of 12 per cent and 18 per cent GST rates for non-AC and AC restaurants respectively. The Association is keen to go with its counterpart in Tamil Nadu, and decide on a common strike date. They will also talk to Andhra and Telangana associations so that the hotel industry in the entire south can hold protests on a single day. Prices of food items served at hotels, restaurants and fast food joints are expected to go up from July 1 as the GST Council has decided on a tax rate of 12 per cent for non-AC hotels reporting a turnover of above Rs 50 lakh and 18 per cent rate for AC restaurants. Veteran hotelier P Sadananda Maiya said input tax credits for hotels under the GST regime will be minimal as most of the items they use as inputs are exempted from tax.

New Delhi, May 29, 2017: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, made a visit to the recently launched North East Organic Showroom-cum-Restaurant situated at Dilli Haat, INA, here today.

The Showroom-cum-Restaurant is managed by theNorth Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Limited, NERAMAC Ltd., a CPSE under MDoNER in its flagship brand, “ONE” (Organic North East). The initiative has also been supported by a mission for NER by both Ministry of DoNER and Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Govt. of India.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jitendra Singh said, NERAMAC has always worked towards promoting Agri-Horticulture produce of North East Region. It has played a key role in socio-economic development of Farmers and small Agri-preneurs of NER by undertaking various activities in the region. People in other parts of the country are yet to be introduced to the rich and healthy organic produce of the North-Eastern Region and once this happens, they would spontaneously come looking for it. This will not only give a boost to trade and business, but also help in enhancing Farmer’s income of NER, he added.

Dr. Jitendra Singh further said that in the absence of organised ‘Mandis’ in most parts of the North East, one of the priority activities of NERAMAC should be to act as a Lead Aggregator of agri-horti produce in NER, particularly when 80-82 per cent of the Agri-horti produce from the region happens to be organic in nature. NERAMAC is committed in giving market linkages to the farmers and Agri-peneurs of NER, which has been the major obstacle in the socio- economic development of the farmers of region, he added.

The North East Organic Showroom-cum-Restaurant at Dilli Haat will showcase exotic and healthy products from all the eight states of North East Region, where people can purchase goods directly at the best price available. The concept of such showroom is to promote healthy food available from NER for increasing health conscious population of the country.

Dr. Singh also said, “The showroom gives a great platform for Entrepreneurs, Agri-preneurs & Farmers of North East who can showcase and sell their organic produce. We are confident that organic food processors & farmers of North East will benefit from this outlet. With the new brand ONE (Organic North East), all the North Eastern farmers come under one common brand and this increases their bargaining power to a great extent to get premium rates. The outlet will not only help the Farmers and Food Processors of North East to increase their income but also promote the culture and traditions of North East and boost tourism."

The showroom-cum-restaurant at Dilli Haat is just the start. DoNER Ministry also supports that the project will expand in entire Delhi NCR and all other major metros like Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore on franchise basis.
