Goa February 17, 2014:-
The Government has appointed KPMG Advisory Services to chalk a strategy for the next 25 years to develop more tourism products in the coastal State.

The Government has also earmarked Rs. 500 crore to develop tourism infrastructure in the hinterland.

“We are also planning to develop hotels, theme parks and convention centres in the State through the public-private partnership mode. And, we expect to mop up at least four to five times that amount for the purpose,” Nikhil U. Desai, Managing Director, Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (GTDC), toldBusiness Line .

According to him, in 2013 over 2.8 million travellers visited Goa, a 12-per-cent rise over the previous year.

Revenues up

Tourism revenues too grew almost by a similar percentage, he said.

This year, in addition to increasing its capital outlay for creating more tourism products, the State Government will also focus more on attracting domestic travellers, “as we see a great potential there”, said Gavin Dias, Deputy General Manager, GTDC.

Besides, plans are afoot to engage tourists for a longer duration in the State, by offering various entertainment options such as festivals and cruises. Currently an average tourist stays for 4-5 days and spends around Rs. 2,000 a day.

With its plans to promote Goa as a destination for MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions), weddings, religious and wellness and health tours, GTDC is conducting exhibitions and other events to promote the State among the travel trade across the country.

Be it beautiful beaches, majestic forts, gigantic waterfalls or historical monuments, Goa has it all. “With more tourism products to come, we hope we will take a leap forward in tourism in the next couple of years,” said Dias.- Business Line
